The Thirteen Posts Of Christmas: #02: 2010 Send Off Edition

Another year has come and gone.
Work is still work.
I started an online journal this year.
I'm keeping it anonymous for now.
I plan on revealing it and myself as editor
if I get to issue #10. Issue #3
debuts in another month or two.

I had a few pieces published this year.
Just had a poem published in amphibi.us.
"The Morning Before The Flash Of Winter"
It's about soft acts of violence.
And nuclear war.
And the end of romance.

There is no Cookin' With The Pope this year.
I'll be cooking my signature gift
to reruns of How I Met Your Mother
and whatever else they put on Fox after Midnight.
Maybe some Sabaton/SYL/Overkill/ on the radio.

Speaking of Strapping Young Lad, I made a mock
book trailer a year or so ago. Uploaded it to YouTube,
but hid it under Private as WMG caught wind.
I offer it to you random passerbys as a gift.
I used to have a regular reader, but they
got a case of the snoots a year(s) ago.

I leave 2010 with a bit of sluggishness
and welcome the promise of 2011.
Until sooner,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

And Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!!!!!!!!!!!!

Preposthumous Poetry And Stuffz: Work #16

This is a little more pointless than Prepost #5. Kind of a time-waster: meow-meow. I uploaded a less-than-healthy workprint of it just to save time. Not very good. For You.

All footage is from some "Are You Popular?" Public Domain video obtained at archive.org.
The song is a Brahms Op.39, #10 by Martha Goldstein. Dist. through CC lic. 2.0

Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz: #15

"Tidbit #13"

This is something from my doom-and-gloom, happy-to-daydream Sophomore year at college. I spruced it up a little for this, and in the end it is actually 78% decent. To me, anyway.

All of the clips are public domain from various videos found at archive.org. The music is "Caligaverunt oculi mei" by Tomás Luis de Victoria by the same folks who did Amicus Meus used in Preposthumous #9.

My theme is Telemann's Sonata for 2 Violins Movement 3 as distributed by MIT for public use.

Preposthumous Poetry And Stuffz: Work #13

"Baseball On The Sunrise Strip"

A poem I wrote last year, "Baseball on the Sunrise Strip" never left my hands. It was four stanzas, three of which sucked rocks, about a nightclub/baseball/bullshit metaphor. The one stanza was what I was going for, but the slosh to get there was not something I felt great about. I trimmed it up for this, changed some tense, pieced it into a tight six lines.

Searching for music, I settled on a tune by Mississippi John Hurt called Nobody's Dirty Business. Recorded in 1928, it falls under a public domain license. The subject matter of the song is very cold and interesting. Mixed with the subject matter of the poem, it doesn't immediately mesh well, but possibly adds an extra texture of what went sour in the "protagonist's" view. It may be used again and soon. Maybe like in the next month for one of my personal favorites of the dead poems.

The film footage is a public domain video of Army Nurses filmed in 1945 by the Armed Forces. Good stuff. I found it here: http://www.archive.org/index.php

The baseball picture is mine.

My theme is Telemann's Sonata for 2 violins, MVMNT. 3 released under CC 2.0 by MIT.

Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz: Work #11

"Cause For Panic"

This is an early poem. Something out of the era of the "crap book." Where I was 90% forced rhyme and etching my way through some darker (and more retarded) stuff. It's the end of the world poem! Woohoo!

Details: This song kicks ass. I forced the video longer than would normally would have liked, but if anything else you can now just rip off the song in its "entirety." The song is a variation on "Barbara Allen" by Hule "Queen" Hines. It was recorded in the 30s by the Library of Congress. I liked the way it abruptly ends (probably either damaged over the years or ran out of recording space on the platter. Still, it fit. It's in the Public Domain.

The footage is all in the Public Domain. The nuke was tested in 1955 in Nevada. The roach footage is from a short documentary called, "Goodbye, Mr. Roach." Both can be found at the internet archive. http://www.archive.org/index.php

As always, My theme is Telemann's Sonata for 2 violins released under CC 2.0 by MIT.

The series will return the 23rd. I'm going off for a week to an undisclosed location to try and better myself.

Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz: Work #9

"Gunfire in Richmond"

This is a Haiku I wrote last year precisely for a certain nameless publication. I got admonished because my haiku wasn't typical haiku and didn't fit a certain haiku standard of haiku-ness. Yeah, so, it has a f--king title. Boo, flackin', hoo. And it is my attempt to bring some 'Ku to the funk. Waaahh.

Thus, why I don't write for publication. I write, then seek its expansion.

Anyway, I think this is the best one yet. Quick and punchy and sweet. "The Best $40 Bucks" was awesome too, but ain't anybody watched it. Click on the "Prepost" link at the end and scroll down.

Details: Mark Holmberg kicks ass. He's like a grit-lit master of non-fiction journalism. The footage used is from a New Year's Eve story he did this past year for WTVR -Channel 6. The story is actually about a murder that took place, Jesus, fifteen years ago. Wasn't New Year's (and I don't think the baby lived) but it was the inspiration.

Music is one response from the chant "Amicus Meus." Shit is badass and will be used again (and soon). Made Public Domain by http://www.cipoo.net/index.html. My theme is Telemann's Sonata for 2 violins released under CC 2.0 by MIT.

Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz: Work #7

"A Motto" was just some random thought that popped in there. Being a play on humility, it does a lot to explain my personality. There isn't much to life if you can't just screw around from time to time. This is how I nyuck.

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Music is Rondo in C. by Dietrich Ewald von Grotthuss as performed and interpreted by any and all of the following: Thomas Goff of England and Jacobus Verwolf of the Netherlands. But its "author" is Joan Benson. Released under CC 2.0-share-a-like. I used the first 20 seconds. And now you may too.

Work #6 - "I Fail To Bleed"

Self-explanatory, sorta. It's about the inability to nude my most personal feelings/thoughts/stuff. I wrote it about two years ago. It's fitting for the 'nother year come and gone. In five days I'll find out if I'm one of the 27s, or if I'll make it to about sixty.

Intro music - Telemann - Sonata for 2 Violins MVMNT. 3 by MIT folks and dist. through CC lic. Main music is Brahms - Op. 39 - No. 3 by Martha Goldstein. Dist. through CC lic. 2.0

Preposthumous Poetry And Stuffz: Work #5

Mom makes a cameo.

"The Best $40" was a poem I wrote probably eight years ago. One that you would have had to been in my head to understand, I don't think I ever sent it out for consideration. Lucky (unlucky) for you, now you don't have to wonder what the hell it means. You can just come by, waste a minute and eight or nine seconds, and see a little bit of the machinations inside my pea-doodler.

All work, except the intro music, is mine (jason l. huskey)
Theme is Sonata for 2 violins by Telemann distributed by MIT on a CC 2.0 lic.

Happy New Year!

The Thirteen Posts of Christmas 2008: #02 Hell In The Valley (Premiere)

Last year about this time I had probably lied down after a day of gathering wood and an evening of burying one of our dogs. At about 10:00AM on Christmas Eve, a varicose vein broke out of my leg and sent me to the hospital for stitches and another shot to the little nest egg (escape money, bail, whatever you call it) I had been nurturing. Losing about a quart of blood would probably dampen any fool's festive mood--and it sure killed mine.

But a year's gone by, my leg's a little healthier (though the support socks are a little aggravating), and the egg is trying to put on some weight as I try to take some off. Lost forty pounds between May 12 and October 3-- it's gone back up a little since--and I'm looking forward to get back on track in a week or two.

Things haven't changed too much since last year--I guess it could always be worse. Hell, my writing's been finding success--twelve or so publications--considering I've only submitted to maybe 165 journals over that time. I have a heck of a lot to be thankful for.

This year I started learning the ins and outs of Windows Movie Maker. Made a few little short clips parodying Conan the Barbarian. About the same time I was releasing those on Youtube, I began working on a Western project that had been rolling around inside my head. Originally thought to be something for my little nephews and niece, it became a Silent picture featuring plastic cowboys and indians as the cast.

For Christmas this year, I am offering it to the world and the thirty views it will probably get in the next year or so. It's long, a little dry, and a little rough, but what "art" ain't? So, without much more talky/talky, I present to you:

Hell In The Valley Of Lorde's Creek.
a jlh production.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E--stoV5u0M

No budget. Me playing guitar. Miniatures. A bird house and a bird feeder standing in as a town square. Oh, you better believe it! All work's mine, if you couldn't tell. ;-)

Merry Christmas!

TTPOC 2008: #04: Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz #4

#4:

"Weekend in Appalachia" was a poem I wrote on the way back from Grundy, Virginia two years ago. Personal, it's a downer for the holidays, sure, but there's snow involved, and on the occasion of family coming together. It's just like Christmas.

As it is Christmas, I got you nice present. I was gonna sing a carol. You're welcome.

Music is: "Deck The Halls" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"

TTPOC 2008: #11: Preposthumous Poetry & Stuffz #3

# 3:

"Revelations On A Saturday Afternoon" is one of my oldest poems. I think editors would get to it, groan at it, and reject my mss because of it--especially when it was titled simply "A." It is sing-songy sorta, and a little too repetitive, but Hey! It is what it is. I liked it enough to revive it.

All work is mine except the intro (telemann son 4 2 violins by MIT CC2).

Preposthumous Poetry And Stuffz: Work #1

WORK #1

"Photo of Walker's Presbyterian Church, Jan. 9, 2007"

Today's Preposthumous Poetry and Stuffz is a Haiku. I tried a gimmick and got my butt handed to me by the editor I wrote it for because I titled it. hahaha. I can't stand things not having a title. I like titles. Some of my crappiest pieces have the best (imho ymmv) titles. Anyway, the picture is of Walker's Presbyterian Church located in Hixburg, Virginia. It was my church throughout my childhood.

The music is provided through a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 License. I remixed it a little for continuity and such, and you are free to strip it from the video if you choose. I destroyed it, but if it floats your tuba, go ahead. The song is Two Violin Sonata No. 1, Mvmnt. 3 by Georg Philipp Telemann as performed by RP and E Goldstein and as distributed by MIT and wiki.

The photo, text, poem, and other crap are mine. Attribution would be cool.

Video: Teaser Trailer For "Lombardo: the devil's vice "

It's a trailer for a clip I'll probably finish filming tomorrow. The title will probably change. I may even do a Miami Vice fan-version of it.

I'll post the straight version sometime after.
Copyrights and all.

Anyway: Lombardo: the devil's vice

Video: Hell In The Valley Teaser Trailer

This is the final video I have to post (for now).
It is a teaser for a short subject silent I made a couple months ago.
I haven't decided what to do with it. I don't feel like cutting it to put it on youtube, so I'm just not sure.

All music and images are original and copyrighted and crappily simplistic.

Video: Baby Conan Sneak Peek Preview

This is a video I made last weekend (30th) from footage taken the prior week. This one relies more heavily on the great score by the late Basil Poledouris for the inspiration.

If you've never seen Conan, the central music here is used during the opening rout of Conan's hometown. The one that ends with Thulsa Doom (bad ass James Earl Jones) decapitating Conan's mama.

Here, it sets the scene for the madness of an easter egg hunt.

Stars Calea, Clay, and Harrison, and features Aidan as Baby Conan.

Anyway:

Video: Baby Conan Teaser Two

This is the second teaser I made with my kin in mind. There's this wonderful scene in Conan, during the montage of Conan's training, where Milius takes us back to the days of the Khan. Genghis had a saying about what is perfect in life.

It's such a short cut of awesome, it's really hard to describe.

Anyway:

Here's my little parody featuring Calea, Clay, and Harrison, and featuring Aidan as Baby Conan.

I'm the one who screwed up the dialogue. Trying to go off memory, and if you know me, my memory's been shot for years.

Video: Baby Conan Teaser

This is a teaser trailer I threw together just messing around with WMM and a video I had of my nephew. So far, it's spawned two "teasers" and one that's more like a special sneak peek preview.

This is the first teaser, simple in its parody.

Anyway:
